San Antonio North Central Community Information

Although locals refer to places like Hill Country Village, Shavano Park, Castle Hills and Hollywood Park as neighborhoods, they are in fact incorporated cities with their own distinct amenities, features, attractions and public spaces. While downtown San Antonio remains the featured destination for all visitors and locals alike, these smaller cities have steadily developed into strong and independent communities of their own.

Hill Country Village became the first subdivision north of San Antonio in the late 1940s. Today, Hill Country Village is an upscale area defined by its beautiful and meandering tree-lined streets and huge homes in a wooded foothill setting that is literally minutes from the downtown sector. Conveniently located seconds from Highway 281, locals benefit from easy freeway access yet reside in an area as popular for its outdoor wildlife as it is for its fine restaurants and shopping. Shavano Park is also an upscale community that is located about 12 miles north of San Antonio. Schools in this incorporated city are part of the Northside Independent School District. The schools include Blattman Elementary, Hobby Middle and Tom C. Clark High. Home to approximately 3,700, Shavano Park is an intimate community with homes built on lots of acreage that make them great places to raise a family. While San Antonio continues to sprawl outward, cities like Shavano Park continue to thrive and evolve with the changes to and development of the surrounding areas. Residents here can walk to a variety of local shopping centers, restaurants and bars.

Bordering Shavano Park is the city of Castle Hills. Nestled against the edge of Olmos Creek, this once vast green space of land is now an emerging city that has a long history in playing an integral role in the development of San Antonio as a city. Today, Castle Hills is primarily residential although it does still have some retail and office space. While most families in this community send their children to private schools, those attending public institutions go to Castle Hills Elementary, then Eisenhower Junior High before graduating into Lee High School. Private schools in or near the city include Antonian High School, Colonial Hills School and Jackson-Keller, as well as many others. Because Castle Hills is one of the larger municipalities, it boasts a wide variety of clubs, organizations and associations that business people or even volunteers may join. Since the city is mainly comprised of residential neighborhoods, Castle Hills does not offer much in the way of nightlife. However, the city is within a 5-10 minutes drive of many other cities that are better known for their attractions.

The town of Hollywood Park provides country living just minutes from downtown San Antonio. Located in the Hill Country foothills, this family-friendly community features many properties with expansive front yards where the homes are set back from the streets, providing homeowners with the peace and tranquility they seek. Home to approximately 3,000 residents, Hollywood Park is the perfect mix of residential, retail and commercial space that makes it easy for retail and service oriented businesses to grow. What makes this suburb unique is the perfect marriage of country life with city life. Proximity to the downtown area puts world-renowned cultural activities and amenities within a few minutes drive while at residents, when at home, can literally escape into the wonderments of Mother Nature by exploring the rolling terrain and wooded hillsides, frolic in running streams or go horseback riding on any one of a hundred trails. Resident here includes doctors, teachers, active military personnel, retirees and young families looking for a safe place to raise a family.

These neighborhoods and the many others like them that are located in North Central San Antonio are the perfect place for any family to reside.
